Esteban was born in Arafel to a large family. He is the youngest son of five and has two sisters older than himself and two younger. His father is a fairly properous merchant, who was able to provide for the family well. When he was thirteen he started training as a member of the standing army. He was looking to develop skills to help him earn his own keep. Two years later one of his older sisters was found to have the ability to channel the One Power. When she left to go to the White Tower for training, Esteban went with her as an escort. While in Tar Valon, he had the opportunity to see the Warders train. He decided at that point to join the Tower Guards in the hope that he too could become a Warder.
