Llywd was raised primarily by his mother. As a child, his father spent much time training with a swordsman, and later went off to fight battles with the rest of the good queen’s men. The reasoning for his father’s absence brought about a great interest in the sword for Llywd, and he often pretended to engage in battles with his friends, substituting horsewhips for swords. During one of these childhood ‘battles’, Llywd was caught with the horsewhip across his face, leaving him with the scar on his left cheek.
Shortly after Llywd’s ninth birthday, his father returned from battle, missing one leg. Although an Aes Sedai had been able to heal him enough to keep him from dying, his leg had already parted from his body, and was beyond repair. From that day forward, his father often told him to live each day as though it were his last, and never let anything get in the way of his goals.
As he grew older, his desire to learn with the sword grew, but his father feared he would not receive thorough enough training to keep him from a grim fate such as his own. On his sixteenth birthday, he made a request to his father that he be granted permission to travel to Tar Valon, to seek training at the White Tower with the warders. Knowing his son would be given proper training there, his father reluctantly agreed.
Llywd said his farewells to his mother, father, and little sister, who at the time was only 8, and the next day, he set off for Tar Valon. He travelled straight for the river, with his horse, Ruto, and caught a ship from Aringill
