Tomon Harkin was born the son of Tralaes and Lirien Harkin. The son of a blacksmith, Tomon grew up around swords and is accustomed to the feel of a blade. Tralaes was not known for his skill with a blade, but Tomon is showing potential with the sword. When he is not working for his father, Tomon wanders through the woods outside the city. Tomon is a skilled tracker and woodsman as well as a blacksmith, and before his father's death, spent every minute of his spare time outside searching for deer and other forest creatures, studying their tracks and lifestyle. Tomon was well known for his carefree and optimistic nature. He is very unfamiliar with the outside world and is content to stay in Baerlon and work for his father. He and his friends care little for anything outside the city, and yet, Tomon feels an urge to get out in the back of his mind. At the age of 7, Tomon went on his first hunting trip with Tralaes. This experience snared Tomon's interest and led him to where he is now. When he was 12, he left on a trip to Caemlyn with his father to see the city and possibly catch a glimpse of the Daughter-heir or even the Queen herself. This trip seemed like an adventure to Tomon, but turned into a tragedy. Tralaes was killed in a fire at the inn. He risked his life to rescue a girl, and although the girl lived, Tralaes could not escape the flames. Tomon was devastated, and returned home on a merchant's wagon. When he returned, Tomon took up his father's place at the forge. He now spends almost all of his time in his father's shop. He seems very subdued, but even though he is extremely young, he is respected by the community and is often called upon for his skill with a hammer. Shortly before his 15th birthday, Lirien passed away from an incurable illness. The Harkins were wary of Aes Sedai, but Tomon accepted the offer to help his mother. The Aes Sedai could not heal her, and Lirien died in the night. On the dawn of his birthday, Tomon left Baerlon. He abandoned the forge and set out for Caemlyn and eventually Tar Valon to hone his skill with the blade. Tomon has been searching for a mentor, and decided that Tar Valon was the place to find someone to teach him.
