Vinderin is from Saldea, born of a common family. His brothers (of which he has 4) have all risen to great heights in the army, and his parents have high expectations. At 15, however, he is gangly and inept. He cannot do anything with a sword and continually drops it and cuts himself. The only thing he can do at present, and do well, is ride horses, tend horses and tend crops.
He has been attracted to a Saldeaan woman about his age named Erwyn who never pays any attention to him. She is more interested in books and knowledge than anything of the world around her. This past summer she was whisked away to Tar Valon. On the night she left, for reasons unknown to Vinderin, she kissed him goodbye. After hardly ever speaking to him and always having her nose in a book, she kisses him.
That kiss burns on Vinderin's lips and in his soul. He is awakened with a fire, a passion. With that kiss, she steals his heart. He decides to go to Tar Valon after her so that he might taste those lips again, feel that fire inside of him.
He sets off with just his passions and his skills to make his way there.
At inns he encounters darkfriends and people of ill repute who lead him awry and farther off his path. Vinderin is very trusting and can easily be taken advantage of but is kind at heart. He will fight if backed into a corner and forced to, but finds other means of resolution usually. He strays and wavers along the path.
The trip is an awakening for Vinderin, and he learns much of the world around him. He is shocked at what he sees, but he feels stronger for seeing it. He becomes more immune to the outside world and more drawn in. The only thing that drives him is Erwyn and if he will ever see her again to win her heart. That drags him through executions of suspected darkfriends, farms burned with people still inside, women raped in broad daylight by gangs of rowdy people in the countryside. He knew of trollocs, being in Saldea, but as a remote farmland, never had any real trouble from them. They were always a thing distant. While he didn't find trollocs, the other things he found sickened him, and hardened him. His outlook changed from being bright and cheery and he withdrew into a sour and bitter shell.
and thus, he arrives at Tar Valon, much changed from the boy he was. Now 15, he is beginning the stages of growth spurts and puberty.
